Facebook is rolling out passkey support for its iOS and Android apps, offering a more secure and convenient alternative to traditional passwords. The feature lets users sign into their accounts using their device's built-in biometrics, such as Face ID or Touch ID, or their device PIN. This brings the social network in line with modern authentication standards already embraced by Apple's ecosystem.
The company says this is a major security upgrade, as passkeys are resistant to common online threats like phishing and password spraying attacks. This is because the passkey is a unique digital credential stored directly on your device. The biometric data used to authenticate you—your fingerprint or face scan—is never shared with Meta or stored on its servers, ensuring your information remains private.
According to the announcement, the same passkey created for Facebook will also work for Messenger in the coming months. The technology, developed by the FIDO Alliance, will also be used to securely autofill payment information when making purchases with Meta Pay and will eventually be used to protect encrypted message backups on Messenger.
Setting up a passkey can be done in the Accounts Center within Facebook's settings, or you may be prompted to create one when you log in. While the feature is currently limited to mobile devices, you will still be able to use your password to log in on a desktop computer or on devices that do not yet support the new standard.
