Apple's U.S. Mac shipments surged 28.7% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025, with the company shipping 2.7 million units to secure a 16% market share, according to a new report from Canalys. The overall U.S. PC market, including desktops and notebooks, grew 15% to 16.9 million units, a rise the research firm attributes to vendors building up inventory ahead of anticipated tariff changes.
The significant growth for Apple was likely fueled by the launch of the new M4 MacBook Air in early March. Other major PC vendors also saw shipments increase, with HP growing 13.1% to maintain its top spot, while Lenovo and Acer grew 19.9% and 16.3%, respectively. Dell saw more modest growth at 8.3%.
Despite the strong first quarter, Canalys predicts a slowdown for the rest of the year. The inventory buildup is expected to lead to more constrained sell-in during the second half of 2025, and downward pressure on consumer spending poses a risk. "Although PCs currently remain exempt, broader tariffs impacting key spending categories have already resulted in inflationary pressure," said Ishan Dutt, Research Director at Canalys. The firm forecasts that total PC shipments in the U.S. will increase by just 2% for the full year.
The report also highlights the difference between commercial and consumer demand. Commercial PC shipments are expected to grow 8% this year, partly driven by businesses preparing for the end of Windows 10 support in October 2025. In contrast, consumer shipments are forecast to decline by 4%. "Consumer demand in the US has remained largely unaffected," said Kieren Jessop, Research Manager at Canalys. "This highlights a key reality: many PC users are indifferent to the Windows 10 EoS until it becomes a significant pain point."
