Apple to Debut Solid-State Buttons With iPhone 20 in 2027 [Report]

Solid-state buttons are reportedly coming to the iPhone in 2027, with Apple targeting the 20th-anniversary iPhone 20 for the technology's debut. The information comes from a post on Weibo by leaker Instant Digital.

According to the leaker, Apple has completed functional verification for the new buttons and plans to begin mass production in 2027. The upgrade would reportedly replace the power, volume, Action, and Camera Control buttons with solid-state versions that deliver localized haptic feedback for a "real touch" feel.

Internally known as 'Project Bongo', the technology was widely rumored for the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple ultimately abandoned the plan at the time due to unresolved technical issues — a move later seemingly confirmed by a key supplier.


Recent reports suggested Apple was still refining the feature to prevent accidental presses and ensure consistent responsiveness. This latest leak implies the company has now overcome those hurdles.

The 2027 target aligns with claims that Apple could skip the 'iPhone 19' name and release an 'iPhone 20' to celebrate the product's 20th anniversary.
