Apple has named "The Rest Is History" its Apple Podcasts Show of the Year for 2025, marking the first time a UK-based production has earned the platform's top honor. The long-running hit, hosted by historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook and produced by Goalhanger, was recognized for its blend of sharp insight, storytelling, and humor that has helped it build a global following.
Apple says the show stood out for the way it brings major historical moments to life — from the rise and fall of ancient empires to iconic events like the sinking of the Titanic — without losing a sense of curiosity or fun. Holland and Sandbrook's conversational style has made the series a fixture at the top of international charts.
Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of Podcasts, Music, Sports, and Beats, praised the show for making a subject as broad as human history feel approachable. "They've created something that represents the best of what's possible with podcasting — it's educational, it's hilarious, and it builds a true sense of community," he said.
The announcement rounds out Apple's year-end celebration of audio content, following the recent release of its 2025 Top Charts. To mark the award, Apple has released a special conversation with Holland and Sandbrook reflecting on their approach to history and their connection with listeners. Fans can also explore related content across Apple services, including a curated reading list on Apple Books and a playlist of the hosts' classical picks on Apple Music Classical.
Holland noted that becoming the first British show to receive the honor felt especially meaningful. "It's the biggest thrill imaginable," he said. "I couldn't be more delighted and honored."
