Apple has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for its sci-fi drama "Pluribus," offering a detailed look at the production of Vince Gilligan's latest series. The video explores how the creative team handled the show's unique premise, where a collective hive mind confronts individual identity, and the massive practical effects required to bring it to life.

Gilligan explains that the show began with a daydream about a character receiving everything they ever wanted. That concept evolved into a story about a woman named Carol, played by Rhea Seehorn, who has to navigate a world where everyone shares a single consciousness except for her. The creator notes that the role was written specifically for Seehorn following their collaboration on Better Call Saul, requiring her to portray a wide range of emotions—sadness, anger, and loneliness—while surrounded by characters who are perpetually content.

The video highlights the technical challenges faced by the cast. Actors playing the "Others" had to learn not to mirror facial expressions or emotions, a standard instinct in acting that had to be suppressed to portray the hive mind correctly. To manage the movement of these crowds, the production hired choreographer Nito Larioza to ensure background actors moved and reacted as a single entity.

The production design team went to great lengths to control the environment. Production designer Denise Pizzini and her crew constructed an entire seven-house cul-de-sac from scratch in New Mexico to serve as Carol's neighborhood. The featurette also reveals the construction of a massive Air Force One set. The crew acquired a section of a real 747 fuselage, mounted it in the air, and surrounded it with green screens to film the arrival of a key character played by Samba Schutte.

"Pluribus" is currently streaming on the service, which was recently rebranded to simply Apple TV. You can check out the official teaser and the full trailer released previously.
