O2 Follows AT&T, Drops Unlimited iPhone Data Plan

Posted June 11, 2010 at 3:44am by iClarified
O2 has posted their iPhone 4 pricing for UK iPhone customers and unfortunately followed AT&T's lead by dropping unlimited data.

The carrier is now offering up to 1GB of data per month. You can purchase an additional 500MB for £5 or 1GB for £10.

Take a look at the chart below...

Vote with your feet - I will be. I'm off at Christmas when my 3GS is up. If enough people do - they will soon change it back.

News report from SKY NEWS UK says that the unlimited plan was dropped, due to abuse of it's network by a group of customers who excessively download high amounts of data, effecting the bandwidth they provide for the 3G unlimited plan. This is not just for iphone customers, but ALL customers. So there will be NO MORE unlimited plans in the UK by O2. In the UK, they have this thing called FAIR USAGE POLICY for DATA only, which is part of your contract. This means that if you download a lot using 3G and your network deems it UN-FAIR usage, then your account can have a data limit applied or your account can be closed.

So instead of ruining it for everyone else who don't "abuse" the "unlimited" data allowance, why don't they just limit the people that do abuse it. Wouldn't that therefore keep the majority of customers happy?

If they were really doing this to stop people from abusing the unlimited plan and downloading large amounts of data, they wouldn't put a 1GB cap on it and make you pay for more. If they weren't doing this solely to make more money then they would have at least allowed people 3GB with their data plan instead of a measly 1GB.

It's a shame that mobile providers are irresponsible and are only interested in the bottom line (money). Everyone understands that the business model of trying to attract as many customers as possible without expanding their network is unsustainable.

The sad part is that O2 has a lower data amount than AT&T, AT&T is changing it to 2GB a month, but is also allowing current customers to continue to keep their unlimited data plans as long as they want. They are forcing people that want tethering to switch to the new data plan, but what do jailbreakers care?

2 questions... Are O2 dropping unlimited data on the iPhone tarrifs but not the other smartphone tarrifs such as the blackberry? I am already in a contract with unlimited data on my iPhone, also my MMS is charged at 3 texts out my text allowance, will this remain as it is until I cancel?

There will not be any changes in your allowances until your contract runs out. After that you are subject to new rates. This does mean that if you plan to renew your contract with a new iPhone you'll loose your current allowance.
