The Connectivity Standards Alliance, the group behind the Matter smart home standard, has launched Aliro 1.0, a new protocol designed to standardize how digital keys work across phones and locks. Backed by Apple, Google, and Samsung, the initiative aims to create a single system that works consistently across residential properties, hotels, universities, and corporate offices.
Today, many smart locks rely on dedicated third-party apps for access. Aliro instead integrates directly with native digital wallets such as Apple Wallet on iOS. Built on asymmetric cryptography, the framework allows an iPhone or Apple Watch to function as a secure credential at an access point.
Aliro supports multiple wireless technologies depending on deployment needs. It includes NFC for tap-to-unlock access, Bluetooth Low Energy for longer-range communication, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for hands-free authentication. The standard is also designed to function in environments without network connectivity, such as underground parking garages and elevators.
Apple is a board member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance and is expected to be among the first companies to achieve Aliro 1.0 certification. The release aligns with Apple's broader effort to expand digital credentials through features such as Apple home key in the Wallet app. Aqara recently introduced the UWB-equipped Smart Lock U400, designed to support the new standard. Other companies pursuing early certification include Kwikset, Nuki, Allegion, and HID.
Although both standards are overseen by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, Aliro operates independently from Matter. Matter governs device-to-device communication, while Aliro focuses specifically on using a mobile device as a secure credential at an access point. The Alliance describes the 1.0 release as the foundation of an evolving standard, with future updates expected to evaluate features such as secure cross-platform key sharing.
