Google is making it easier for users to switch from competing artificial intelligence platforms by introducing new tools that import chat history and personal context directly into Gemini.
The switching tools are rolling out to all consumer accounts starting today. The feature lets users bring over context from other AI apps so Gemini already understands key details, such as relationships, interests, and personal background, without starting from scratch.
Users can copy a suggested prompt from Gemini's settings, paste it into their current AI app to generate a summary of their preferences, then bring that data back into Google's platform. Gemini analyzes the information and securely saves those details for use in future conversations.
Google is also adding support for importing full chat histories. Users can upload a ZIP file containing past conversations from other providers. Once imported, those conversations can be searched within Gemini, allowing users to continue where they left off.
To reflect the expanded functionality, Google is renaming its "past chats" feature to "memory," a change that will roll out in the app over the coming weeks.
