Apple is preparing to open Siri to third-party artificial intelligence assistants in iOS 27, ending ChatGPT's exclusive integration and allowing competing chatbots to handle user requests directly.
The change centers on a new Extensions system planned for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing tools that will let AI chatbot apps installed from the App Store integrate with Siri. If a user installs a platform like Google Gemini or Anthropic's Claude, they will be able to send queries to those services from within the assistant, similar to how ChatGPT works today.
Test versions of the new operating systems reveal a dedicated menu within the Apple Intelligence and Siri settings panel. This interface will let users enable or disable which installed agents can interact with Siri, the previously rumored standalone Siri app, and other system features. The menu will also direct users to a dedicated App Store section to discover and install compatible AI services.
Moving to a standardized extension framework removes the need for Apple to negotiate one-off integration deals with individual AI companies. Instead of relying on a single partner, users will be able to choose which chatbot handles different requests. It also creates a new revenue opportunity. Apple can collect its standard commission on subscriptions to third-party AI services, expanding a category that is already generating significant App Store revenue.
The shift follows internal debate over Apple's AI strategy. Before selecting ChatGPT as its initial partner, Apple reportedly evaluated multiple chatbot providers. Former Apple AI chief John Giannandrea is said to have questioned OpenAI's staying power and favored a deal with Google.
This developer-facing system is separate from Apple's underlying partnership with Google to rebuild Siri using Gemini models. That arrangement affects Siri's core technology, while the Extensions framework allows third-party apps like Gemini to process specific user requests when selected.
The feature arrives as part of a broader push to update Apple's software. Reports indicate the company is working to unify Siri with Spotlight search and add new entry points like an "Ask Siri" button and "Write with Siri" controls across the interface.
Apple is expected to preview these changes at WWDC26 on June 8. It remains unclear whether Apple will require approval for AI apps that integrate with Siri, or how quickly services like Perplexity, Alexa, Meta AI, Grok, and Copilot will be supported.
