Apple is preparing a major overhaul of Siri in iOS 27, shifting away from the traditional voice assistant model toward a more conversational, chatbot-style experience and a standalone app. The effort is part of a broader AI push aimed at turning Siri into an agent that can tap into your personal data and execute tasks across applications.
The new Siri, internally code-named Campo, is slated to headline Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. According to Bloomberg, Apple is rebuilding its AI platform around Siri after struggling to gain traction with Apple Intelligence. The update introduces a conversational format where users can interact via text or voice. Software engineering chief Craig Federighi previously resisted pushing users into a chat interface, but the explosive popularity of services like ChatGPT has forced the company to adapt.
To handle this, Apple is testing a dedicated Siri app for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It looks a lot like a thread in the Messages app. Users can type requests, toggle voice mode, and even upload photos or documents for Siri to analyze. The main screen organizes past interactions into a list or grid, letting you pin favorite chats and search through your history.
The way you trigger Siri is also changing. Apple is experimenting with a design that replaces the glowing screen edges introduced in iOS 18. Instead, activating Siri may pull down a "Search or Ask" prompt from the Dynamic Island. When it finds an answer, the interface expands into a translucent Liquid Glass panel that you can pull down to continue chatting.
Apple is also working to replace Spotlight search with this new Siri interface. It will handle local device queries alongside web searches, generating summaries, bullet points, and images directly in the results. The system is expected to tap into more types of personal data through a delayed feature known as Personal Context, and provide deeper responses using sources like Apple News.
You will also see Siri popping up in more places across the operating system. A systemwide "Ask Siri" button is being tested in context menus, allowing you to highlight text in any app and send it straight to a new conversation. There is also a "Write with Siri" option appearing at the top of the keyboard to make Apple's existing text generation tools easier to find.
Apple initially planned to roll out many of these features much earlier. After facing persistent internal performance snags, the company pushed several key capabilities — including deeper personal data access and on-screen awareness — to later this year. To make it all work, the updated assistant relies on a combination of Apple Foundation Models and external tech. Apple recently confirmed its partnership with Google in a deal worth roughly $1 billion, integrating Gemini to help handle the conversational backend.
