BOE Seeks Secondary OLED Supplier Role for Apple's 2027 iPad Air

BOE is seeking to join Apple's OLED iPad supply chain as a secondary supplier for the next-generation iPad Air, according to a report from South Korean industry publication The Elec. Samsung Display has already been selected as the primary supplier, leaving BOE to clear Apple's qualification process before it can secure commercial supply orders.



The Chinese display maker is developing the panels at its B12 fabrication facility in Chongqing, home to the company's sixth-generation OLED production line. BOE has yet to submit samples for formal evaluation, and industry sources cited by The Elec anticipate a qualification decision around November or December. Even if the company clears that review, initial shipments would likely be modest, with early output limited to iPad Air units destined for the Chinese market or refurbished devices rather than the global launch. If BOE falls short, Samsung Display would become the sole supplier for the initial production run.


Samsung Display plans to begin mass production toward the end of this year or early next, ahead of the redesigned iPad Air's anticipated launch in the first half of 2027. The redesigned models are expected to arrive in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes with a hybrid OLED panel combining a glass substrate with thin-film encapsulation, a single-stack RGB emissive layer, and an LTPS backplane operating at 60Hz. That configuration keeps costs below the tandem-stack OLED used in the iPad Pro while replacing the iPad Air's existing LCD display.

Securing iPad Air business would mark an important step for BOE, which already supplies OLED panels for Apple's iPhone lineup but has yet to establish itself in the company's larger OLED products. The company recently lost ground elsewhere in Apple's OLED supply chain, with Samsung expected to supply the OLED panel for the upcoming iPad mini. Beyond the iPad Air, BOE is also pursuing a secondary supplier role for Apple's OLED MacBook Pro from its B16 8.6-generation OLED production line in Chengdu, but persistent yield challenges mean commercial shipments are not expected until after 2028, according to the same report.
