Apple's OLED iPad mini is expected to launch later this year with an 8.4-inch display, but a new supply chain report suggests it will retain a standard 60Hz refresh rate rather than adopt ProMotion.
According to supply chain details shared by leaker yeux1122 on Naver, the upcoming iPad mini will feature an 8.4-inch low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) backplane hybrid OLED panel with a fixed 60Hz refresh rate.
The leaker says mass production is already underway on Samsung Display's A2 Generation 5.5 OLED production line at its Asan campus in South Korea.
Apple has been gradually expanding OLED across its iPad lineup. The iPad Pro uses more advanced dual-stack low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels with ProMotion support, while LTPS panels are typically less expensive than their LTPO counterparts. The company is also reportedly planning to bring OLED technology to the iPad Air in 2027.
If accurate, the move would continue Apple's practice of reserving ProMotion displays for its higher-end devices. The recently launched iPhone 17e also features a 60Hz OLED display, indicating Apple continues to pair OLED technology with standard refresh rates on some of its lower-priced devices. Even so, the transition from LCD to OLED would still bring benefits such as higher contrast, deeper blacks, and improved power efficiency.
