Apple is reportedly planning changes to the standard iPhone 18 aimed at lowering costs, potentially delaying its release so it can launch alongside the budget-focused iPhone 18e.
The latest details come from the Weibo account Fixed Focus Digital, a source that regularly tracks Apple's manufacturing activity. Production lines for both the standard iPhone 18 and the 18e are said to be syncing up, suggesting the base model could miss the traditional fall release window. This lines up with earlier supply chain chatter indicating Apple may push the standard model back to focus on its premium hardware later this year.
The timing shift may not be the only change. To keep production costs under control, Apple is reportedly exploring adjustments to the base model, including the use of a less advanced manufacturing process, a lower-tier chip, and reduced memory. These changes would bring it closer in positioning to the "e" series.
That approach would also align with expectations for the device's design. Recent supply chain feedback suggested the base iPhone 18 will retain the current generation's design. A delayed launch and more modest hardware could help Apple prioritize development and production of its first foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18 Pro lineup expected this fall.
