Apple's upcoming AI smart glasses will reportedly rely heavily on hand gestures for navigation, leaning into the control scheme the company established with the Vision Pro to operate a device with no physical screen.

According to MacRumors, the wearable is expected to feature a specialized dual-camera system to handle both media capture and continuous system input. A high-resolution camera will take care of standard photos and video meant for social sharing. Meanwhile, a secondary, low-resolution wide-angle lens is specifically tasked with tracking hand gestures and providing real-time visual context to Siri. This setup allows users to control the device and issue commands without needing to tap physical buttons or look at a display.

Relying on hand tracking makes practical sense for a display-free form factor. Apple has already normalized this type of spatial interaction with its mixed-reality headset and is widely expected to bring similar camera-based gesture recognition to future camera-equipped AirPods. By standardizing how users interact with its screenless wearables, Apple is building a consistent ecosystem around ambient computing.

Battery life remains the primary bottleneck dictating these hardware decisions. To ensure the glasses stay slim and lightweight enough for all-day wear, Apple is skipping augmented reality displays, LiDAR scanners, and 3D cameras for this first generation. Those advanced components draw too much power for the battery technology capable of fitting into a traditional eyewear frame. As a result, the device will act as an audio and visual companion, closely mirroring the current feature set of Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Apple is testing several different frame designs made from lightweight acetate to keep the hardware from feeling too heavy. The plant-based material is more flexible than standard plastic, keeping the weight down without looking cheap.

The glasses will rely heavily on the revamped Siri assistant expected to arrive in iOS 27. Because the wide-angle camera is constantly scanning the area, users can ask questions about whatever they happen to be looking at in real time. Aside from AI queries, the glasses will handle basic tasks like taking phone calls, dictating texts, and capturing video.

An initial preview of the smart glasses could happen late this year, with an official retail launch currently targeted for 2027.
