Apple is preparing to introduce a new financial feature in iOS 27 that will allow iPhone users to split group bills simply by taking a picture of a physical receipt. The feature is expected to be unveiled alongside a broader suite of software updates at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference next week.
According to Bloomberg, the upcoming service lets users photograph a receipt, assign specific items to different people in their group, and automatically calculate individual shares. It can calculate each person's share, including item costs, tax, and tip. Once the amounts are tallied, it generates payment requests directly through the Wallet app or within Messages.
The service is tied to Apple Cash, the company's peer-to-peer payment system. Users on the receiving end of a request will also have the option to approve payments directly from an Apple Watch. By building the functionality directly into iOS, Apple would be competing more directly with bill-splitting apps like Splitwise and peer-to-peer payment services such as Venmo and Cash App.
Separately, Apple is planning a feature that will let users create their own custom digital passes in the Wallet app. This would allow people to generate passes for things like gym memberships, local events, and other uses that do not already offer native Wallet integration.
The additions further expand Wallet's role as a hub for payments, digital passes, and other financial services. The company has steadily broadened its financial ecosystem since launching Apple Pay, adding products such as Apple Cash, Apple Card, and a high-yield savings account.
