OpenAI has partnered with custom keyboard maker Work Louder to release the Codex Micro, a dedicated hardware controller designed to streamline artificial intelligence coding workflows. Built for ChatGPT Codex, the compact accessory provides physical controls for interacting with the company's coding assistant on Mac and Windows.
Designed specifically for the ChatGPT Codex app, the device features 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary encoder, and a planar joystick. Developers can configure the joystick to trigger common Codex skills, including planning, reviewing pull requests, debugging errors, and refactoring code.
The mechanical keys can be customized with an included set of 32 icons to map core actions. Default shortcuts include buttons to accept or reject AI-generated code, activate push-to-talk voice dictation, and start new chats. The controller can also display pinned Codex tasks, making it easy for developers to switch between ongoing jobs and see which ones require attention. A built-in dial lets users adjust Codex's reasoning effort on the fly, keeping responses fast for simple tasks or enabling deeper reasoning for more complex problems, a feature OpenAI recently highlighted alongside its GPT-5.6 model lineup.
The controller combines CNC-machined polycarbonate with an aluminum base featuring a sandblasted anodized finish. It connects to a host computer via Bluetooth or USB-C and uses POM and POK mechanical switches with customizable RGB lighting. Buyers can choose between Clicky and Silent switch options.
The Codex Micro is available to preorder for $230, with shipping estimated to begin July 24.
