iPhone Dev-Team Releases PwnageTool Jailbreak for iOS 4.0

The iPhone Dev-Team has released a version of PwnageTool which can jailbreak many devices with iOS 4.0.

Each supported device has few different scenarios that users need to consider when performing the upgrades, you need to check below and perform the upgrade in the particular way that matches your current device state.

NB: With PwnageTool 4.0 certain devices are not supported this is because they are not supported in iOS 4.0 or they are not supported by our software. We’re working on ways to get past these restrictions.
* iPhone 2G - not supported
* iPod Touch - not supported
* iPod Touch 3G - not supported

PwnageTool 4.0 only recognizes the official IPSWs that came out yesterday. If you had developer access to the “4.0 GM” IPSWs, do not try to use those.

iPhone 3GS
Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

● If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
● If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0

iPhone 3G
● If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
● If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.0 ipsw using DFU mode.
● If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
● As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

iPod touch 2G
● If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
● As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

Once jailbroken you can unlock your device using this UltraSn0w tutorial.

I have 3gs 3.1.3/ 05.12.01 jailbroken with spirit Can I use any of the new sw to upgrade to i4.0 and jailbreak and unlock I seem to read that I cannot

I got my 3gs working with the new update from dev team i was stuck on add sim as i have a o2 iphone now running att in usa but new update let me get cydia running so i could use ultrasnow now im all up and running 3gs style.

3GS, 04.26.08, old bootrom. Everything worked as promised BUT multitasking does not work unless in safe mode. I double-click the home button and all I get is blank/black bar at the bottom. (In safe mode, all the background apps show up just fine)

3Gs w/old bootrom... Worked like a charm! I don't lose wifi after rebooting, YouTube works, and my battery life seems ok. Awesome!

I have an iPhone 3gs week 26, model MB, on 3.1.3 fw with unlocked 5.12.01bb jailbroken with spirit.... Am I able to upgrade to 4.0 and jailbreak ?

damn, my 3GS factory unlock with new bootrom is killing me...I could use 4.0 due to the factory unlock but would lose many Apps without having a JB :((( I guess this means waiting...but Dev-Team is doing an amazing Job....thx for the hard work !!!

I have a 3GS old bootrom. I am in the category where my current JB method is Spirit on 3.1.3 (5.12.01). So should i be downgrading to 3.1.2 (baseband 5.12.01) and then running balckra1n and then use the custom ipsw generated by the pwnage tool.

Well, i have tried that method with iOS4 GM and it worked. I was on 3.1.3 and tried to upgrade to 4.0, but always got 1604 error when tried to restore. So what i did is, restored back to official 3.1.2, jailbroken with blackra1n, made custom 4.0 firmware with PwnageTool and it worked. :-)

Great - so did u use the latest pwnage 4 released today to get the custom ipsw? And why did u use the GM build when the actual ipsw is available? Thanks for your help.

I was doing that with leaked GM build when this final wasn't out yet. And that was with modified PwnageTool 3.1.5. So, if it worked then with GM and modified PwnageTool, then i see no reason why it shouldn't work with final iOS 4 & this new PwnageTool.

Ive got a mac and the bloodly stupid pwnage tool hanging at the custom ipsw (whatever its bloodly called) and not letting me even look for the file.

yeah ipod touch 3G (third generation) thats the ipod i currently have and im waiting for the jailbreak on it :/
