Apple Says Software Fix for iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Reboots Should Arrive Early Next Week
A software update to address random freezes and reboots on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max after failed Face ID attempts is in the works and should be available early next week, Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac. The problem does not affect every unit, but readers and social media reports suggest it is reasonably widespread, with phones locking up.

Affected phones stop responding to touch for a few seconds and then reboot on their own, leaving a panic log in the Analytics section of Settings. The site reproduced the problem by covering a tester's face with a hand while using Face ID to open the Passwords app, which triggered the same sequence owners described. The failure appears to be a software glitch rather than a hardware fault, so swapping phones is unnecessary.
This year's Pro models use a reworked Face ID layout that moves the infrared camera under the display near the clock, allowing a 25% smaller visible Dynamic Island. An early teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro shows the camera sitting apart from the rest of the front module and connected by three separate cables.
Apple also just released watchOS 27.0.1 to address unexpected restarts on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
