A recent customer survey by Retrevo found that 34% of iPhone owners believe they have a 4G device.
Maybe the "4" in the iPhone 4 name gives iPhone owners (34%) the false impression that they already own a 4G phone but the fact is Apple doesn't offer a 4G phone at the moment. Coincidentally, a suspiciously large percentage of Android and BlackBerry owners may be suffering from the same delusion. BlackBerry owners (24%) are almost as confused as iPhone owners since RIM doesn't currently offer a 4G phone.
Retrevo's report found that confusion and skepticism may impede 4G adoption among consumers. Unfortunately, they did not specify the exact question asked to iPhone owners. 4G is also a common term representing 4th generation. It's possible that some of those surveyed may have thought they were being asked whether or not they had a fourth generation iPhone.
34% Not Stupid, not everyone needs to know about everything they own. I own a lawnmower and i can't tell you anything about the horsepower, size of the engine, cycles, etc.
More like, Apple's marketing strategies worked in some 34% of users. In this case, naming the phone "iPhone 4" at a time where 4G was the 'next big thing' that consumers had to have on their phones.
"Unfortunately, they did not specify the exact question asked to iPhone owners."
Actually they do. In the first chart it says the question was "Are you planning on buying a 4G cell phone this year?", and one of the possible answers was "already own one".
Based on that, it's a lot less likely that people were confused about 4G meaning fourth generation, since that would make a lot less sense as a question.
Alternately, there's a possibility that a few of the people who previously indicated that they owned an iPhone (and were therefore categorized as iPhone owners) actually Do also own a 4G phone, and therefore answered "already own one". That would most likely be a minority though, so it's still most likely about 33% of the iPhone owners really thought they own a 4G phone.
I have to tell, I remember specifically asking the sales person:
- Will the iPhone 4 support the coming 4g network?
- Yes, sir, the iPhone 4 will be compatible with the 4g network, actually sir, the 3gs will be too, just to let you know...
This happened at Bestbuy last year.
But to be honest, I am not surprised about Bestbuy novice, not the first time that they had no idea what they were talking about. Apple on the other part will never warn you about these type of things, this is how they make $billion revenues. Remember, no GPS? Then no video? Then no front facing camera? No FaceTime over cellular? Always something BIG left off to ensure you come back for more, like selling crack:)
