iPhone 4S Owners Hoping to Eventually Unlock Should NOT Update to iOS 5.0.1

Posted January 18, 2012 at 8:38am by iClarified
Contrary to many reports, iPhone 4S owners hoping for a future unlock should not update to iOS 5.0.1 but instead stay on iOS 5.0 to maximize their chances of an unlock.

MuscleNerd has confirmed to iClarified that an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak for iOS 5.0 will be released at the same time as the iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak, or a day or two later. As always, for those looking to unlock, it is standard operating procedure to stay at the lowest possible baseband.

In fact, its recommended that those already on iOS 5.0.1 should check their build number and downgrade from build 9A406 to 9A405 while Apple is still signing both builds. Due to differences in the basebands, its more likely that an unlock will be found for the earlier build than the later. You can find direct firmware download links here.

We can't guarantee an unlock will be found for iOS 5.0. However, in November MuscleNerd revealed that an unlock was looking 'very promising' and was able to use an exploit to dump the baseband bootrom. However, it's not clear if or when an unlock based on that exploit will materialize.

For more updates you can follow us on Twitter, Facebook, RSS, or check out the new iClarified menu bar app.

So I was at baseband 1.0.14 on my 4S 5.0.1. I then used the other firmware, there are 2 firmwares for 5.0.1 on a 4S, to get my baseband down to 1.0.13. How the hell can it work like that? I'm glad it did, but how? I always understood that it is difficult next to impossible to downgrade a baseband - for example anyone stuck on ipad baseband who might want to downgrade back to whatever stock firmware/baseband. No utility required, just a simple restore from itunes with the phone in dfu. If that worked so easily why can't I install an older firmware on my mother's 3GS and thereby downgrade the baseband?

Sory wt th spelling,I punch it right but got wrong
Frank - January 18, 2012 at 5:00pm
You can't downgrade to iOS 5.0 because Apple is no longer signing the firmware. Just stay where you are (9A405).
Andreas - January 18, 2012 at 8:57am
Confusing article. Is it really possible to downgrade your baseband? If it's true that there are different baseband versions between build 9A406 and 9A405, then why downgrade to 9A405 if it will not downgrade your baseband at the same time?
iph0ne - January 18, 2012 at 2:01pm
didn't try it out yet but it probably will downgrade the baseband. And that is only possible because apple is still signing both firmware versions and therefore both basebands.
Axe - January 18, 2012 at 2:05pm
Yes it's true. 906 & 905 has different baseband 1.0.14 & 1.0.13. So rule of thumb is stay at 1.0.13.
Andreas - January 18, 2012 at 2:19pm
Yes, I understand it is possible to downgrade as long as Apple is still signing both 9A405 and 9A406. My question is: Will this downgrade your baseband as well once you have upgaded to the latest one?? My understanding is that you can never downgrade you baseband the same way you are downgrading the firmware.
Hash - January 18, 2012 at 2:52pm
Yeah, can someone verifty this?
Hash - January 18, 2012 at 4:14pm
Agreed.... Unlocked is great for traveling purposes. And also for re-sale.
Phil - January 18, 2012 at 6:41pm
What a pile of horse crap! A factory unlocked phone IS worth significantly more. Hacked/software unlocked? Maybe that will get you a couple more dollars, but that's it.
Unlock - January 18, 2012 at 6:49pm
Sorry Phil, you don't know what your talking about. I sold my iPhone 4 for $150 more than my wife's because mine was software unlocked. You just gotta find the right market.
qw1987 - January 18, 2012 at 6:54pm
Sorry Unlock, but it is YOU who don't know what you are talking about. You are living in the past. What you say is no longer true, in ANY market.
Unlock - January 18, 2012 at 7:08pm
Really Phil? Cause I just did that just over a month ago. You gonna tell me it's changed that dramatically in a month? Just cause you can't do it doesn't mean no one can.
qw1987 - January 18, 2012 at 7:47pm
No. I am just not willing to scam somebody selling them an 'unlocked' phone, knowing that they don't know that they are being misled.
Unlock - January 18, 2012 at 8:31pm
