Apple is still facing shortages of the iPhone 4 and has instructed Genius Bars to swap faulty devices with the iPhone 4S, reports 9to5Mac.
Mid-April it was the white 16GB GSM iPhone 4 that was being swapped out at many Apple Stores. Now its black 16GB iPhone 4 and black 32GB iPhone 4.
Like with the 16GB white iPhone 4 constraint situation of mid-late April, Genius Bars without stock of the black 16GB iPhone 4 and black 32GB iPhone 4 replacements units have been instructed to provide customers with comparable iPhone 4S replacements. Not all Apple Stores are facing these constraints (but many are), and these constraints should clear up within a few weeks if the white iPhone 4 16GB constraint process follows suit here.
If you need to have your iPhone 4 serviced. Now might be a good time for a visit to the Genius Bar!
I've been having trouble with my 32GB iPhone 4's home button for some time now, and I have AppleCare.
I've not swapped this one out because I have SHSH blobs for this one and I will probably end up with one that I can't jailbreak. So for the time being, I guess I'll sit tight.
Actually they have been doing this through Asurion insurance for a handful of my customers who I see at the Verizon store I work at. It's not unheard of but if they don't have your specific phone in stock you might get lucky enough to receive a 4S. I've seen it about 5-6 times in a matter of 2 weeks. I haven't seen it happen at the apple store though. They seem to be pretty well stocked on iPhone 4's in all colors and storage space.
