Apple is warning Retina Display MacBook Pro owners not to use palm rest covers as it can damage the display of the notebook when you close it.
MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012): Do not use palm rest covers
Symptoms Leaving palm rest covers or other material on the palm rest surface of your computer could result in damage to the display when you close it.
Resolution To enable thin design, the clearance between the display and the palm rest area is engineered to tight tolerances. Do not use palm rest covers as the added thickness may interfere with the designed resting position of the display.
As a best practice, keep the palm rest clear of any material.

I left my 2010 MBA clear on any material and got a damaged screen which had the trackpad imprint etched into it. Is Apple saying that this won't happen with the Retina MBP and there's no need to protect the screen?

My MBA has the keyboard buttons rubbed into the screen. Your tight tolerances need to be adjusted apple. Dont they test their products?

They replaced my screen for me but I now put tissue paper on the keyboard before closing the machine. Obviously apple has trouble with the finish in terms of making sure the hinges are properly aligned. Perhaps they've got it right with the retina Mbp? Would hope so given the price.

Same reason we put 'do not consume' on nearly all packaging now?
