Apple has cut its 9.7-inch iPad panel orders from LG by 50% or more, according to a DigiTimes report. This has reportedly reduced LG's capacity utilization rate at its P9 factory to about 60%.
Apple has reportedly decided to cut shipments for its 9.7-inch iPad products in the first quarter to as low as six million units, down from Apple's originally estimated 12-15 million units, due to increasing popularity among consumers for the iPad mini, said the sources.
The cut has brought a drop to the P9 factory's to capacity utilization rate to 60% and it may drop even lower to 50% throughout the first quarter, added the sources. LG Display's average capacity utilization rate is also likely to remain at about 80% throughout the time period as a result, noted the sources.
LG is reportedly increasing production of TV panels at the plant to compensate for the decrease in capacity utilization rate.
I doubt it's because of the popularity of the iPad mini (at least not completely), instead they're trying to not tip their hat that they're instead gearing up for a different display for the iPad 5.
If Steve jobs were still alive, this would not happened.
I believed he would not make the iPad mini, because people would always buy the cheaper and smaller model rather than the large iPad. Therefore killing your own large iPad sales. Just remember prior the iPad mini, iPad sales were strong, even smaller tablet were out, but didn't affect the iPad sale.
Dude, they said - like months ago - that the ipad mini wasn't going to cannibalize regular ipad sales. Here they go. Wrong wrong wrong. Steve Jobs will not, however, roll over in his grave. He is dead dead dead.
Agree!
I bought a present for my wife, I picked the smaller and cheaper option (if there weren't any iPad mini, I would buy the large iPad). So if your iPad mini sales are strong and large size have come down, no brainier. Because other tablet are still not as popular as iPad. CEO fault!!
