Apple iPhone 6 to Feature 'Bezel-Free' Display?

Both Apple and Samsung are expected to release smartphones this year that feature a 'bezel-free' display and fingerprint scanning, reports the Korea Herald.

An industry source said Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S5 would sport a display without a bezel, or the rim surrounding a screen, and allow users to scan their fingerprints at the bottom of the smartphone screen. The phone will also eliminate the home button hardware featured on the previous Galaxy models, he said.

“The finger-scanning technology will be available on the bottom left and right sides, and not the entire display,” the source said. “Scanning fingerprints on the entire screen, which was much talked about recently, will be available in the latter half of this year as there are still technological hurdles to overcome,” he added.

Notably, their source said Apple is also testing a prototype with a 'bezel-less' display.

The secret to Samsung's display is reportedly a single-layer touch panel that also enhances the display’s transparency level, leading to improved energy efficiency and viewing accuracy. Samsung has reportedly been working on the bezel-free technology since 2012 under the project codenamed Project B or Galaxy B.

Some critics are concerned that a bezel-free display would make the device too vulnerable to external impact; however, that could potentially be mitigated by a sapphire glass display.

Exactly, who the Fck buys something we tried to get rid of on tv's for over 50 years and goes back to it except on phones? Makes no sense. If this does happen, it will be the end of concept ideas.

Where does it say anything about a curved screen? If anything will be curved or rounded it will only be the right and left edges of the screens glass. Wound probably have a slightly rounded edge or chamfer. .

This is Apple's way "out" of saying they'll never make a bigger screen. They can say "well we figured out how to add a bigger screen but minimize the impact on overall size of the device." Valid, really.

Hell no, this will lead to curved screen, but as long as it's one of the few looks with sizes then OK.
