Jony Ive Talks Steve Jobs, Apple Design Process in On-Stage Interview [Video]

Posted October 10, 2014 at 8:47am by iClarified
Apple's SVP of Design, Jony Ive, sat down at Vanity Fair's Summit Thursday night for an on-stage interview. Ive discussed many topics focused around design, but he also touched on lessons he learned from Steve Jobs as well as other companies copying Apple.

● An audience member asked Ive how he feels about companies copying Apple designs. Ive called it "theft" and laziness. He said Apple designers give up so much to design products, that it's offensive when someone copies.

● Ive sees the Apple Watch as his first step beyond designing consumer electronics. It's clear he sees the watch as a watch, and not just another gadget.

● Finally, he talked about why Apple waited so long to make big-screen iPhones. It took Apple's design team to get a big-screen form factor right without compromising the look and feel of the device. He also said other big phones today are ugly.

Ive also discussed his inspirations growing up, and how he eventually ended up at Apple. He also talked about lessons learned when working with Steve Jobs. Particularly, Ive noted that Steve was the most focused person he had ever met his in life.

I agree with u about Apple's unique touchscreen design with the largest smartphone screen when it first came out. It was the first of its kind and it changed the whole smartphone industry's landscape. But in terms of the OS, Apple did copy a few features from other OSs and improved on it. They did copy features like multitasking and Notification Center from WebOS and Android respectively. I got no problem with it as long as the feature isn't patented.

All the design team did was slap a 5.5 inch screen on an iphone. Want to see a design team doing magic? Look at the lg g3 form factor with that gorgeous 5.5 TRUE retina display. Apple clearly did not invest any time in making the bigger phone. They did nothing but slim the phone down.

Lol he didn't mean Apple copying, yet you didn't even compare the 5.5" screen if the style matches @ssamsung, besides they're the ones copying the features yet they don't own android. LAWL

To me, copying or making similar software features that aren't patented is ok, cause they all will have the same or similar features at some point. But when u copy the design of a device, that is wrong. Every phone and/or tablet maker is in some way guilty of this including Apple.
