Apple is building a new research and development center in Yokohama, Japan, reports Asahi.com and NHK. The construction was announced at a City Hall press conference by mayor Fumiko Hayashi.

Apple's facility is to be built on 12,500 square meters of land that used to be a Panasonic factory. It will apparently be four stories high and about 25,000 square meters in size. As is typical with Apple constructions, the facility will be environmentally friendly. For example, by 'greening' the rooftop to reuse water and reduce energy consumption.

The research and development center was previously announced by Apple who said:

"We’re excited to expand our operations in Japan with a new technical development center in Yokohama which will create dozens of new jobs."

Based on the size of the building it appears as though Apple may have expanded its plans for the facility.
