It's pretty difficult to brick an iPhone unless you tried to update while jailbroken, take it to Apple they will help you.

Put it on DFU mode then restore and update via iTunes.
DFU mode (How To)
1.Plug in your iPhone to pc or mac
2.Press power button and home button for 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding the home button till your iTunes pops up or your machine finds the device connected.
3.Restore and update.
4.Thank me.

Also tell his that his screen should stay off after he releases the power button but continues to hold the home button, if the screen comes back on, he needs to release the home button and then hold both again for about 10 seconds.

I usually tell people to hold both buttons for about 7 seconds till the screen turns off, then wait one more second and release the power button but still hold the home button. If the screen stays off, your doing it correctly, if not, restart the process all while it being plugged into your computer and iTunes is up and running.

Restore - Update to new and don't use your computer to bring back the backup, it's most likely your computer.
