Plex to Shut Down Plex Cloud Service on November 30

Posted September 11, 2018 at 8:26pm by iClarified
Plex has announced that it will shut down the Plex Cloud service on November 30, 2018. Plex had already stopped allowing new Plex Cloud services in February.

We hold ourselves to a high standard, and unfortunately, after a lot of investigation and thought, we haven’t found a solution capable of delivering a truly first class Plex experience to Plex Cloud users at a reasonable cost. While we are super bummed about the impact this will have on our happy Cloud users, ending support for it will allow us to focus on improving core functionality, adding new features and content, and delivering on our mission to provide a world-class product that we can all rely on and enjoy.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions regarding the shut down...

What does this mean for users of Plex Cloud?
On November 30th, 2018, you will no longer be able to access your Plex Cloud server. As with any Plex Media Server, your media files themselves will not be affected. We encourage you to set up a Plex Media Server on a computer or NAS device on your local network and Plex On! Our friends at WD have lots of storage options from hard drives to NAS devices, and they’re currently offering a discount through Plex Pass Perks 120 to help you out.

What happens to my cloud content?
Your content is yours and will remain in your cloud storage, untouched by Plex. Whether you use Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive, your cloud storage accounts are separate from Plex Cloud and will continue to work as long as you maintain your subscriptions with those respective 3rd-party services. On November 30th, 2018, all 3rd-party cloud storage services will be unlinked from Plex Cloud.

What can I do with my content in cloud storage if I only use it for Plex Cloud?
You can download your content from your cloud storage and store it locally on a NAS, run a data center hosted VPS server and point to your cloud storage on it, or something more adventurous. Feel free to use our community forums here to get ideas and know-how on more specialized setups.

Can I migrate my Plex Cloud database to my local Plex Media Server?
No. While you can download your Plex Cloud database, that capability has only been intended for issue investigation. We do not offer a means to migrate or replace a Plex Media Server database with a Plex Cloud database.
