Apple is planning to update the 16-inch MacBook Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED displays in the second half of 2020, reports the often accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

According a new research note, Apple is planning to update four to six products with mini-LED displays over the next couple years. The first being a refreshed 16-inch MacBook Pro and a high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an A14X chip.

Apple is purportedly planning to shift to Mini-LED to avoid burn-in issues and reduce dependence on Samsung as a supplier. The Mini-LED panels will be supplied by LG Display with Epistar, Zhen Ding, Radiant Opto-Electronics, Nichia, Avary Holding, and TSMT in the supply chain.

Kuo said that the mini-LED displays will "significantly improve productivity and the entertainment experience". Benefits of Mini-LED include thinner and lighter product design, good wide color gamut performance, high contrast and HDR, as well as the ability to dim specific screen areas.

The displays will use approximately 10,000 LEDs compared to 576 in Apple's upcoming Pro Display XDR. Each LED is less than 200 microns in size.
