Apple's next generation Mac mini will get M2 and M2 Pro chip options, according to a new report from 9to5Mac.

Previous rumors had suggested the Mac mini would get an M1 Pro processor option; however, sources say that plan was likely scrapped in favor of the Mac Studio.

Development of the new M2 Mac mini is said to be nearing completion with a release date to be announced later this year.

Internally known as “Staten,” M2 is based on the current A15 chip, while M1 is based on the A14 Bionic. Just like M1, M2 will feature an eight-core CPU (four performance cores and four efficiency cores), but this time with a more powerful 10-core GPU. The new performance cores are codenamed “Avalanche,” and efficiency cores are known as “Blizzard.”

The M2 Mac mini version is allegedly codenamed J473 and the M2 Pro version is codenamed J474. The M2 Pro is said to offer 8 performance cores and four efficiency cores. That's a total of twelve cores, two more than the current M1 Pro.

It's unclear when Apple will unveil the M2. It's possible chip could be announced at WWDC in June; however, Apple has yet to complete its transition to M1. At this week's 'Peek performance' special event, Apple did confirm a new Mac Pro is still on the way.
