Apple's VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, Bob Borchers, hinted at the company's plans to launch a new Mac Pro with Apple Silicon in a recent interview. Speaking with India Today, Borchers confirmed that the company still intends to move its entire lineup of personal computers to Apple Silicon.
"We have a clear goal to transition fully to Apple Silicone," said Borchers. "We believe strongly that Apple silicon can power and transform experiences from the MacBook Air to all the way up to the Mac Studio. We've been very clear from the beginning that our goal is to take our entire product line to Apple Silicon. And that's something we intend to do."
Currently, Apple has transitioned all its Macs to M-series processors except the Mac Pro. Despite this, professional users are still eagerly waiting for that model because the full size desktop typically provides better power, expandability, and upgradeability.
Borchers also touted several advantages of Apple Silicon, including its focus on energy efficiency.
"I think for the longest time, the broader industry was focused on performance," says Borchers. "And we've introduced this idea that you need to think about how you can do that efficiently. And part of that focus on performance per watt has allowed us and kind of pushed us to integrate some core technologies into silicon so we can deliver them as efficiently as possible."
Unfortunately, rumors purport that Apple has cancelled plans to release a high-end configuration with 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores, likely meaning the Mac Pro will use the same Ultra chip as the Mac Studio. Additionally, the new device is said to keep the same design and not feature the ability to upgrade RAM.
