Apple is planning to update its base model iPhones with LTPO display panels starting in 2025, according to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants. This will finally bring 120Hz ProMotion to the company's standard models.

On Twitter, Young said, "Apple to go all LTPO in 2025, even base models to get 120Hz refresh, finally."

DSCC elaborated in a recent blog post...

LTPO backplanes continue to gain share as more panel suppliers get their LTPO capacity qualified for mass production. LTPO penetration rose from 10% in 2021 to 23% in 2022. We expect LTPO to continue to grow and achieve over a 40% unit share and a 60% device revenue share over the forecast period shown here. The rise in LTPO is a result of strong demand for higher refresh rates and always on displays at lower power. Apple adopted its first LTPO smartphones in 2021 on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. In 2025, DSCC expects all Apple's iPhone 17 models to adopt LTPO panels as LTPO capacity continues to rise and costs fall.

ProMotion supports an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz, for fast frame rates when users need it and battery life preservation when they don't. Unfortunately, it appears customers who don't opt for the more costly iPhone Pro will need to wait for another two years to enjoy the feature.
