Microsoft has announced support for 3D meetings in Microsoft Teams via Microsoft Mesh. The meetings are available in the Teams desktop app and Meta Quest VR headsets, but they require a Teams or Microsoft 365 plan to get started.

"Mesh in Teams elevates engagement in Teams meetings with ready-made 3D immersive spaces crafted to suit your needs, whether it's a team social gathering, brainstorming session, or a round-table discussion," explained Nicole Herskowitz, Vice President of Microsoft Teams. In 3D meetings, Teams users appear as a customizable avatar, and they can enjoy the same meeting experience they already now but within a 3D space with spatial audio.

How It Works
Immersive spaces in Teams need to be enabled by an admin in the Teams admin Center. Once that's done, users can join an immersive space in Teams by selecting the View menu from a Teams meeting and then selecting "Immersive space." Organizations can also enable avatars in the Teams admin center to allow users to join regular Teams meetings as a custom 3D avatar.

Pricing
Mesh in Teams is available with a Microsoft Teams Essentials license ($4 per user/month), Microsoft 365 Business Basic ($6/user/month), Microsoft 365 Business Standard ($12.50/user/month), or the more expensive Microsoft 365 E3/E5 entreprise plans. The company also said that its Mesh app for Meta Quest headsets will be available starting tomorrow, January 25, in the Meta Quest app store.
