Apple has released its 2023 App Store Transparency Report, providing some statistics on App Store operations including reviews, rejections, removals, and downloads.
Since it launched in 2008, the App Store has proven to be a safe and trusted place to discover and download apps. At Apple, we're committed to creating a great experience for customers and developers — and we review every app for compliance with our App Review Guidelines to uphold the highest privacy, security, and content standards.
Our App Store Transparency Report provides data about how we operate the App Store in all 175 countries and regions where it's available. Below you'll find information about our efforts to help keep the App Store a safe and trusted place for users to find apps they love. This report covers data from 2023.
In 2023, Apple reviewed over 6.8 million app submissions. Out of these, approximately 1.76 million were rejected due to various reasons, including safety, performance, business, design, and legal guidelines. Safety concerns alone accounted for over 103,000 rejections, while performance issues led to more than 1.1 million rejections.
The report details the most frequent violations that resulted in app removals. Leading the list were design-related issues, which accounted for over 76,000 removals. Fraudulent activities were the second most common cause, with more than 35,000 apps removed for violating Apple's anti-fraud guidelines. Intellectual property infringements and spam were also significant contributors to app removals.
As previously reported, Apple terminated over 373 million customer accounts associated with fraudulent activities, preventing an estimated $1.8 billion in fraudulent transactions. Additionally, 117,843 developer accounts were terminated, primarily due to fraud.
Geographically, the majority of government takedown requests occurred in China, with 1,285 apps taken down. South Korea and India followed, with 103 and 30 apps removed, respectively.
The report reveals that the App Store received an average of 734 million weekly visitors and nearly 788 million app downloads per week in 2023. Almost 400 million customer accounts searched for apps weekly and Apple processed over 52 billion app updates each week.
