Apple today announced Final Cut Camera 2.0, a major update to its free pro video app that adds ProRes RAW recording and genlock support on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The update, unveiled during Apple's "Awe dropping" event, also brings new manual adjustments for the Center Stage front camera across the new iPhone family.
Final Cut Camera 2.0 unlocks ProRes RAW capture on iPhone 17 Pro models, recording pristine RAW data directly from the sensor for maximum flexibility in post. It also introduces open gate recording, using the full camera sensor to capture a wider field of view at resolutions greater than DCI 4K, giving editors more room to reframe, stabilize, and set final aspect ratios without compromising quality. Apple says the Media Engine in Apple silicon enables faster exports and smaller, more flexible files than other RAW formats. In Final Cut Pro 11.2 (Mac) and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3, editors will get precise ProRes RAW controls for exposure, color temperature, tint, and demosaicing.
The app now supports genlock, letting creators synchronize iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max (and other recorders) to a reference signal for frame-accurate multicam edits. Apple's genlock API is available to third parties and is already used by the Blackmagic Design Camera ProDock.
For the wider iPhone 17 lineup — iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max — Final Cut Camera 2.0 adds manual Center Stage controls, so users can record horizontal or vertical video with the all-new front camera. Apple notes this is the largest and first square front camera sensor on iPhone, with a wider field of view and higher resolution.
Other additions include: • Apple Log 2 support (wider color gamut) for iPhone 17 Pro in ProRes or HEVC; apply the Log 2 LUT in Final Cut Pro for iPad and Mac to view/edit with scene vibrancy. • Timecode options: Time of Day, Record Run, or external timecode for precise clip identification. • Support for the new 200mm Telephoto on iPhone 17 Pro, capturing ProRes up to 4K60.
Final Cut Camera 2.0 also integrates seamlessly with Live Multicam in Final Cut Pro for iPad.
Availability Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available later this month as a free download/update on the App Store. It requires iPhone XS or later on iOS 18.6 or later; some features require iOS 26 or an iPhone 17 Pro.
