Apple has officially launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in Hong Kong, allowing businesses to accept contactless payments directly on their iPhones without the need for additional hardware. The feature enables merchants to accept payments from contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets using only an iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app.
With Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants can accept contactless payments through a supporting iOS app on an iPhone 11 or later running the latest version of iOS. At checkout, the merchant simply prompts the customer to hold their contactless card or device near the merchant's iPhone, and the payment is securely completed using NFC technology.
Adyen, Global Payments, KPay, and SoéPay are the first payment platforms in Hong Kong to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone starting today. The service supports contactless cards from leading payment networks including American Express, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Visa.
Apple emphasized that privacy standards for the new feature match those of Apple Pay. All transactions are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and Apple does not retain transaction information or card numbers on the device or its servers. This expansion follows the recent launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone in Singapore earlier this month.
