Apple is evaluating several new camera technologies for future iPhone models, with one upgrade likely arriving first on its next Pro lineup.
According to a post from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Apple currently has a handful of imaging features in development. These include a variable aperture system, a 1/1.12-inch large sensor for the main camera, an ultra-wide lens with enhanced optical image stabilization, and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to be the first to get the variable aperture. That lines up with recent supply chain movement suggesting parts for a variable aperture camera have already entered production. The change would let the camera physically control how much light enters the lens, rather than relying entirely on software, which could improve low-light shots and produce more natural background blur.
The rest of the upgrades are still being evaluated. The leaker says that if things go smoothly, Apple will likely roll them out one at a time across future iPhone generations, instead of introducing everything in a single release.
