iOS 27 to Integrate Visual Intelligence Into Camera, Focus on AI and Performance

Apple's iOS 27 update is shaping up to focus heavily on performance and AI. Alongside a suite of new generative photo tools, the company plans to fold Visual Intelligence directly into the iPhone's default Camera app.



Internally code-named Rave, the upcoming operating system takes a more measured approach than last year's sweeping redesign. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is deliberately pushing standard interface updates to the back burner. The strategy is to deliver a highly optimized release centered on system stability and new AI capabilities. That lines up with earlier reports that Apple has been working to clean up legacy code and boost battery life.


On the AI front, one major addition is a total overhaul of the Photos app. Apple is preparing Apple Intelligence editing tools that will let users natively extend, enhance, and reframe images. These generative features go well beyond the current Clean Up tool, closing the gap with the advanced photo editing options already offered by Google and Samsung.

Apple is also streamlining how the iPhone interacts with the real world. Visual Intelligence, which currently requires launching a separate shortcut, will be built directly into the Camera app with Siri integrated into the experience. This camera integration will let users easily pull nutritional information from food packaging or extract details from business cards. It's a move that also supports Apple's hardware roadmap, which leans heavily on visual intelligence for upcoming camera-equipped smart glasses and AirPods.

Finally, there is Siri itself. Apple is building a standalone Siri chatbot app to directly rival ChatGPT and Claude. Gurman says the app features a dark, streamlined interface that looks like a text message thread, complete with a prompt field and support for file attachments. It will also be able to process multiple commands in a single query. Apple also plans to support deeper third-party integrations.
