Google has announced a major redesign of the Gemini app, alongside a new cloud-based agent called Gemini Spark that can carry out background tasks across connected apps and, later this summer, directly on the Mac.
The interface changes, branded as Neural Expressive, are rolling out now across iOS, Android, and the web. Google is moving away from traditional text-heavy responses in favor of interactive timelines, graphics, narrated videos, and other dynamically generated visuals. The company has also integrated its Gemini Live voice experience directly into the main app, allowing users to move between typing and speaking without interrupting the flow of a conversation.
The biggest functional shift comes from Gemini Spark. Powered by Gemini 3.5, Spark operates as a cloud-based agent capable of handling multi-step workflows in the background. Users can ask it to monitor their inbox for school updates or analyze monthly credit card statements for recurring subscription charges, and the agent will continue working even if the app is closed. To interact with third-party services like Canva and Instacart, Spark uses the Model Context Protocol. That is the same open standard Apple recently adopted for Xcode 26.3 to support agentic coding features.
Google is also expanding Gemini's presence on Apple's desktop platform. The native Gemini app for macOS will integrate Spark later this summer, allowing the assistant to work with local files and automate desktop workflows. The Mac app is also gaining a new screen-aware voice drafting feature that uses on-screen context to transform spoken thoughts into properly formatted text directly where the cursor is active.
Rounding out the update are several additions tied to Google's paid AI tiers. A new Daily Brief agent organizes personalized morning updates from Gmail and Calendar, while Gemini Omni can generate cinematic video clips from combinations of text, images, and video inputs. The rollout comes as Apple reportedly prepares to open iOS 27 to third-party AI assistants like Gemini and Claude.
