Apple is handing the entire broadcast of a live Major League Soccer match over to the iPhone 17 Pro this weekend. It marks the first time a major professional live sporting event broadcast will be captured entirely on iPhone.
The matchup takes place this Saturday, May 23, when the LA Galaxy host Houston Dynamo FC at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Fans can stream the game live on Apple TV starting at 7:30 p.m. PT. The event comes during the final weekend of MLS play before the league pauses for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Instead of relying on traditional stadium broadcast rigs, production crews will use only the iPhone 17 Pro to capture the action. Apple says the smaller form factor allows camera operators to get closer to team warmups, player introductions, and create new in-net goal angles throughout the stadium. The broadcast also takes advantage of the phone's three 48MP Fusion cameras and Apple Log 2 video support.
Apple first incorporated the iPhone into a live sports workflow during a September 2025 "Friday Night Baseball" broadcast between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, using the device for select cinematic shots and in-stadium footage. The effort later earned recognition from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which added one of the broadcast iPhones to its permanent collection.
Following positive fan response, Apple expanded iPhone usage to additional broadcasts, including the 2025 MLS Cup, before integrating the technology into regular live sports workflows for Friday Night Baseball and MLS coverage throughout the 2026 season.
The company says iPhone 17 Pro offers the equivalent of eight lenses through its triple-camera system, helping deliver the broadcast quality viewers expect while enabling new camera placements and perspectives not possible with larger equipment.
