We'd hold off on buying an iPad mini for the next couple of weeks. An OLED replacement is expected at Apple's reported October 28 launch, making this a poor time to pay full price for the current A17 Pro model.
The catch is that the new mini could cost considerably more. Waiting would let you see whether its screen is worth the premium, or whether you'd rather save money with the existing model.

How Soon Could the New Mini Arrive?
Apple has reportedly invited media to a launch experience in Los Angeles on October 28. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman expects the OLED iPad mini to appear alongside new Macs.
He also suggests November 6 as a possible on-sale date, based on preparations for an Apple Store reset the night before. Apple hasn't announced a release date. If you need a mini for a trip or work before then, the new model may not arrive in time.

The Display Is the Main Reason to Wait
Today's mini has an 8.3-inch LCD, while an earlier supply-chain report points to an 8.4-inch OLED screen for its successor. The rumored increase in size is tiny.
OLED pixels produce their own light and can switch off individually for black. Dark movie scenes and white text against a black background could look richer than on the current LCD. That is a compelling upgrade for a tablet used for reading and watching video, even if you don't need a faster processor.
It's still unclear whether the new mini will get ProMotion. Gurman has heard reports of both 120Hz and 60Hz units. The higher refresh rate would make scrolling and animations smoother; OLED alone doesn't provide that benefit.
A Faster Chip and a Better Camera Position
Leaked Apple code and product artwork point to an A20 Pro chip and a front camera on the landscape edge. Today's mini has A17 Pro and a portrait-edge 12MP Center Stage camera. Moving it would put the camera above the screen, rather than off to one side, when you take a video call with the iPad propped sideways.
A20 Pro could make the next mini more attractive for demanding games and creative apps, although Apple hasn't announced performance figures for the tablet. Revamped speakers are also expected.

What You Already Get With the A17 Pro Mini
For drawing, handwritten notes, and marking up documents, the current mini already supports Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Pencil hover. It also supports Apple Intelligence.
At 293 grams for Wi-Fi or 297 grams for cellular, the A17 Pro mini is easy to carry and hold while reading. Both versions are 6.3 mm thick.
Apple rates the A17 Pro mini for up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or video, or nine hours of browsing over cellular. Storage choices are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The OLED model's battery life, storage options, and Pencil compatibility haven't been announced.

The New Mini Could Cost More
The current 128GB model costs $599 from Apple with Wi-Fi or $749 with cellular. Gurman expects the OLED version to be considerably more expensive and has floated $799 as a possible starting price. That is his estimate, not an announced Apple price.
Retailer discounts could widen that gap, though the offers we checked on October 16 weren't deep enough to make us rush. Our tracker listed the 128GB Wi-Fi mini in Space Gray at $569.99 on Amazon, about $29 below Apple. We'd wait rather than buy now for that saving; a much larger discount would make the current model more tempting.
Our Advice: Wait Until Late October
Unless you need a mini immediately, we'd wait for the reported October 28 announcement. You don't have to buy the OLED version, but knowing its price and whether it gets ProMotion would make it much easier to choose between the two.
If you already own an A17 Pro mini, keep using it until you can see the new display for yourself. OLED could be a worthwhile upgrade if you spend hours reading or watching video, but a faster chip alone is a weaker reason to replace a tablet that still runs your apps comfortably.
