Save Your iOS 4.0 SHSH Blobs Before It's To Late

Posted July 14, 2010 at 11:54pm by iClarified
This is a reminder to all those hoping to jailbreak and unlock their iPhones to save your SHSH blobs for iOS 4.0.

You can do this with Firmware Umbrella and you do not have to be jailbroken. It's very important you do this before Apple releases iOS 4.1 or 4.0.1.

Instructions are here:
Windows
Mac

1) DOWNLOAD - google thefirmwareumbrella - install tinyumbrella for your PC's OS. 2) Run it 3) Plug your iphone in 4) Check advance options 5) Pick Device/Version iPhone4/3g/3gs (whatever phone you have) 4.0 (YES 4.0, NOT MATTER WHAT OS IS ON THE PHONE) 6) Pick Location Apple 7) Click Save My SHSH 8) It should say SHSH SUCCESSFULLY saved! 9) Pick Location Cydia 10) Click SAVE again This is not doing ANYTHING AT ALL TO THE iPHONE. The only reason it needs your iphone is so it knows what your ECID is. Then it gets your files from apple and stores them on cydia, so incase you ever want to roll back, they are there. THIS MUST BE DOWN BEFORE ANY NEW UPDATE IS LIVE. It is VERY simple and is no threat to your phone. The SHSH blob is what itunes asks from apple to make sure you are updating to the latest OS for your iphone. When a new OS comes out (like 4.0.1) apple DROPS the current OS (in this case 4.0) and only starts signing the new one (4.0.1) This means if you wanted to upgrade your phone, you can only update to 4.0.1. If you have your SHSH blob backed up for 4.0 (or any other OS) you can chose to upgrade/downgrade to that version when ever you like. This would allow you to switch to a Jailbreakable OS in the event that the current OS is not jailbreakable.

If your on 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 save your SHSH for that firmware, upgrade to 4.0 official save SHSH Blobs then downgrade back to previous firware using shsh blobs. You get 4.0 SHSH blobs and you don't lose your jailbreak.....

You don't have to update to save 4.0 .... lets say your at 3.1.3 .... just connect and save the SHSH blobs now and it will be for 4.0 cause apple is only signing 4.0 right now don't bother updating .... and don't worry if your not jailbroken just save the SHSH's ---( Correction apple is only signing 4.0)

Would someone be so kind as to explain to me what SHSH blobs are and why we need them for the upcoming jailbreak? I am very experienced in all of this, but I have had a 3G for the last two years and never paid any attention to this stuff. Is it some counter attack by Apple to limit jailbreaking? Thanks in advance to anyone generous enough to enlighten me.

Hey Cody...SHSH blobs are like a key to get into a door...and each new door is another iOS firmware that requires a new and different key. 3.1.3 SHSH blobs get you back into the 3.1.3 firmware if you accidentally updated your iPhone to 4.0. Now you need the 4.0 blobs since you'll only be able to restore your iPhone to 4.0.1. Once Apple releases a new firmware...you won't be able to get that key to the previous firmware. Hope that wasn't too confusing!

I'm currently running an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom, jailbroken with spirit on 3.1.3. I'm a little confused at MuscleNerd's warning...my SHSH blobs are saved for 3.1.3...should I be updating to 4.0 and save those blobs and lose my jailbreak? And with the upcoming spirit jailbreak...is it ok this time to update to 4.0 as the upcoming spirit is supposed to jailbreak all firmwares and basebands? I don't rely on the unlock for my iPhone. Thanks very much in advance for the advice!

Dave, I would save your ssh blobs, wait for apple to update then see what is released by the Dev Team.. Let the dust settle and see what comes about... You are fine where you are at now, just sit back and relax.. IMO.. :)

Thanks Ken! The blobs are already saved for 3.1.3 but I should have worded my question this way...can you save 4.0 SHSH blobs even though you are on 3.1.3? Cheers

Dave: Yes, you can. It is recommended that you do so. Once its stopped being signed, you won't be able to ever install it, unless you have those shsh blobs backed up.

I've tried this on my iPhone 4 and similar to the comments above, 1. it looks different than the tool they're displaying there and 2. the Umbrella app is throwing this error: "Your SHSH for iPhone4 4.0 (8A293) was NOT saved." As an FYI, my Umbrella app I got from clicking on the link here and clicking on MACOSX Mirror. It says TinyUmbrella - semaphore v4.00.80. Maybe I'm using the wrong version? Strange cause it detects my phone and puts in the ECID automatically. These screens say you have to put that in manually.

Yes it does work with iPhone 4. However I was unable to save the SHSH to Cydia, I had to save it to my own computer.
