Apple has leased the ground floor and mezzanine of the historic Hirsch Building in Amsterdam for an Apple Store, according to One More Thing sources. The building is at Leidseplein 29 in the waterside city and overlooks a major intersection and busy plaza.
ifoAppleStore reports that speculation began in August 2009 when Apple leased upper-floor offices for its Benelux operations. Recently the ground-floor space went vacant, and an art gallery installed a temporary public exhibit. Interior photos show a layout and volume similar to the Opéra (Paris) store that opened earlier this yearmasonry columns rising to a tall ceiling, a partial mezzanine, interior skylights and arched windows to the outside. Outside, the 1909-era building offers similarly-impressive details: a huge copper dome, wrought-iron upper balcony railings, with tall and intricate stone arches in front of expansive windows.
Apple could open the store as early as mid-2011 and may have already begun hiring.
