OnLive Desktop Switches to Windows Server 2008 to Resolve Licensing Issues

OnLive Desktop, an iPad app that provides you with access to a cloud PC with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office preloaded, has reportedly switched to Windows Server 2008 to resolve licensing issues.

Microsoft posted last month saying that OnLive Desktop was in violation of its Services Provider License Agreement and that they were "actively engaged with OnLive with the hope of bringing them into a properly licensed scenario."


Recently an OnLiveFans member beez1717 noticed that the keyboard had changed when using the service. A site administrator, Ady Carter, discovered that this was due to a change in the operating system.

"It occurred to me that the reason for the change in keyboard could be related to a move away from Windows 7," said Carter. "A quick check later and yes, they have."

The change is thought to bring OnLive into compliance with Microsoft's licensing requirements.

"OnLive Desktop now uses Windows Server 2008 which does adhere to VDI/SPLA licensing and the end users notice minimal difference," explained Carter.
