Apple supplier Tata Electronics has tightened internal security controls and hired a global consultant to conduct a forensic audit after a ransomware group leaked hundreds of thousands of purported confidential client files on the dark web.

The ransomware group World Leaks recently posted more than 200,000 files totaling over 630 gigabytes of data to its leak site. According to Reuters, the exposed cache includes purported component design papers and other internal documents related to Apple, Tesla, TSMC, and Qualcomm. One purported document from Apple's Silicon Engineering Group maps Apple part numbers to corresponding TSMC components, while others contain detailed product reliability tests and mechanical drawings. Reuters said it was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the leaked files.

In response to the intrusion, Tata notified the Indian government and implemented stricter access controls across its facilities. Remote access to sensitive internal tools, such as purchasing systems, has been restricted to a select group of employees. Access to Tata's internal corporate network is also more tightly controlled for workers connecting from outside company facilities. Apple's security team is reportedly coordinating closely with the manufacturer on both immediate and long-term protective measures.

Tata Electronics has become a key part of Apple's effort to diversify manufacturing beyond China. The company is currently helping assemble roughly a quarter of all iPhones in India. The cybersecurity incident adds to a string of recent operational challenges for the company, which is also facing a local health investigation over allegations that its iPhone parts facility in Tamil Nadu contaminated nearby agricultural water supplies.

The breach is the latest cybersecurity incident to affect Apple's manufacturing ecosystem. Last month, primary assembler Foxconn suffered a similar ransomware attack involving stolen project data. Neither Apple nor Tata has commented publicly on the ongoing investigation.
