iPhone 5 to Support LTE in Europe, Asia, and U.S.A

Apple's next generation iPhone will reportedly support LTE in Europe, Asia, and the U.S.A, according to the WSJ. The phone will likely be revealed at the company's September 12th special event.

Apple Inc.'s next iPhone will work on the fastest wireless networks around the world -- including in the U.S., Europe and Asia -- though it is unlikely to be available on every carrier, people familiar with the matter said.

Notably, there are an estimated 36 LTE bands around the world, compared to 22 bands for 3G. Building a phone that supports multiple bands is possible but difficult.

"It's like patchwork quilt in terms of spectrum," said Bill Davidson, senior vice president of Qualcomm. "It will be impractical to have all of the bands."

No word yet on which bands will be supported.
