Corning demonstrated the strength of its third generation Gorilla Glass at CES. The latest version of its damage-resistant cover glass for consumer electronics is based on a completely new glass composition, with durability enhancements developed at the atomic structural level of the glass.

With its new Native Damage Resistance, Gorilla Glass 3 has been developed to provide improved durability to withstand deep scratches and cracks in the glass. As a result, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance provides enhanced scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility, and better retained strength once a scratch occurs.

Engadget recorded the video below that shows the company dropping a 130 gram ball to see what damage it could inflict on the glass. Corning said that production will ramp up at the end of Q1 and the glass should appear in devices by the second half of 2013.
