New York City is investigating the possibility of implementing new payment methods for parking tickets, according to MarketWatch. The city issues 8-10 million tickets annually and has yet to offer a good mobile payment option.
The city’s finance department is looking into alternative payment methods like Apple Pay, PayPal and Bitcoin for the roughly $600 million in parking ticket revenue it collects annually by issuing up to 10 million tickets.
Drivers can currently pay for tickets online, via mail, or in person; however, the system is not mobile friendly and charges a 2.5% convenience fee for card transactions.
The vision is an “aesthetically pleasing” mobile interface that lets users take a picture of their ticket or scan the its barcode to access their ticket details and initiate payment through a smartphone.
The city has issued a 'Request for Information' due January 15th that will assist its “understanding [of] the current market environment for mobile payment options.”
