Apple's iPhone 6s will reportedly add some new features including an upgrade to 2GB of RAM and possibly come with a pre-installed Apple SIM, according to AppleInsider.

A person familiar with Apple's future product plans, who has provided reliable information in the past, indicated to AppleInsider that the so-called "iPhone 6s," and presumably the Plus version as well, will in fact be upgraded to 2 gigabytes of RAM. Apple has used a single gigabyte of RAM in its iPhone lineup dating back to the iPhone 5, which launched in 2012.

This would follow approaches previous approach of upgrading the RAM in the iPad before updating the RAM in the iPhone. Last year the iPad Air 2 was update with 2GB of RAM.

The site's source also says that Apple is strongly considering shipping the next generation smartphone with an Apple SIM pre-installed. That SIM lets customers signup for mobile plans from any participating carrier right from the Settings app.

The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.

It's unclear if Apple will be able to get carriers onboard with the Apple SIM for iPhone. Even with the iPad, Verizon would not participate. Carriers are likely concerned that Apple is trying to insert itself between carriers and their customers.

Apple is widely expected to release the iPhone 6s this fall. Previous rumors suggest the smartphone could be updated with the same Force Touch feature found in the Apple Watch.
