Early benchmarks for the new Apple iPod touch have already surfaced online. TechCrunch managed to run Geekbench on the device, revealing an A8 processor that is clocked slightly lower than the one on the iPhone 6.
The processor appears to be running at 1.10GHz per core, vs the iPhone 6’s A8 processor, which clocks in at 1.39GHz. The Geekbench scores clock in at 1379 and 2440 right out of the box with as much idle state as I could manage. This means that the iPod touch A8 processor is under-clocked slightly from the iPhone 6, which is not surprising given the battery constraints I mentioned above. It also appears to have 1GB of RAM.
The new iPod also features an M8 motion coprocessor, 802.11ac wireless connectivity and Bluetooth 4.1.

I want a $200 device that can make calls via Google Voice. Upgrading from the A5 to the A8 makes the iPod touch a strong alternative to the iPhone for those who don't want a cellular contract. Apps like Skype or Voxox can turn it into a functional phone.

The new iPod touch is essentially an iPhone 6 without cellular capabilities or the same battery life, relying on Wi-Fi for connectivity.

They are great for kids. And not everyone wants a cellular bill.

You won't find an iPhone 6 with those specific trade-offs; Apple handles the hardware optimization differently for the iPod touch.
